Pressed Edible Flower Cake Decorating
We've entered the enchanting season of blooming gardens. Creating a garden cake, decorated with edible pressed flowers, is a delightful way to incorporate nature's beauty into your dessert.
When it comes to selecting flowers for your cake decorations, choose varieties that are safe for consumption. Not all flowers are edible, and some can be toxic or treated with pesticides. Look for organically grown flowers or those specifically labeled as edible. Popular choices for edible flowers include pansies, violets, marigolds, calendulas, roses, lavender, and chamomile.
To prepare flowers for decorating your cake, you'll need to press them in advance. Here's a simple guide to get you started:
Select fresh, pesticide-free flowers at their peak bloom
Pick at a time when petals are dry. Otherwise, pat dry with a paper towel before you press
Gently remove any insects, dirt, or damaged parts from the flowers
Place the flowers between parchment paper or absorbent paper inside a flower press or heavy book
Apply pressure by stacking more books or using the straps/screws of a flower press
Leave the flowers to dry for 2-3 weeks, ensuring they are fully dry before use
Now, the real fun begins! Embellish your cake with edible pressed flowers, carefully arranged to create your desired garden scene. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you decorate:
Choose a cake with a neutral, smooth frosting to let the pressed flowers stand out
Use tweezers to delicately handle the fragile flowers
Stems, leaves and petals from different edible plants can be mixed and matched to create the flower height and scene you're envisioning
